In Summer 2024, I stepped into the role of my sorority Alpha Omicron Pi’s (AOII) TikTok manager, as leadership looked to strengthen our presence on TikTok to better connect with potential new members (PNMs).
Summer is an especially important time for sorority social media, as PNMs often turn to TikTok to get a sense of the chapter’s personality, values, and interests. During this time, it’s crucial that content feels authentic to the chapter while tapping into sorority recruitment and cultural trends that resonate with our female college-aged target audience.
Over the course of my time as TikTok manager, I helped grow @uf_aoii’s presence to over 8,000 followers, generating more than 1 million views and over 150,000 engagements through trend-driven, platform-native content. I focused on storytelling that reflected our chapter’s identity while also participating in recruitment trends and branded concepts. Below are a few videos I’m most proud of:
AOII and the City
This video was inspired by a trending TikTok format poking fun at the way Carrie Bradshaw walk-runs through New York City in Sex and the City. As part of our recruitment spirit week theme, “AOII and the City,” I played on that trend by reimagining Carrie’s run as running home to the AOII house on Bid Day, capturing the excitement, energy, and main-character feeling of the moment.
AOII x Poppi
This video features an energetic dance our chapter did with Poppi during AOIILooza (our play on Lollapalooza), celebrating our sponsorship for Spirit Week. I picked the part of Lipgloss where the lyrics say “it’s poppin’” to play on Poppi’s name and vibe, and directed a fun, high-energy dance routine that shows how Poppi kept us energized throughout the week.
Girlhood
This video is a montage I made during a photoshoot on one of the days of spirit week, set to a trending remix of Apple by Charli XCX and Supercut by Lorde — a sound that was everywhere on TikTok during summer 2024 as part of the “girlhood” trend. I used it to highlight the little moments we share as sisters like hugs, laughs, and candid moments, capturing how much we genuinely love and support each other.
Mock Recruitment
This video was filmed during mock recruitment on spirit week and features a chapter dance to an AOII-themed song, with everyone wearing AOII shirts. Dance videos tend to perform especially well on TikTok during sorority recruitment, particularly at SEC schools, because they are high-energy, instantly recognizable, and easy to engage with. This video earned over 500,000 views and more than 38,000 likes, reinforcing how strong chapter-pride content resonates with a wide audience.
Stereotypical?
This video follows a TikTok format that plays on the stereotype that “stereo girls are so stereotypical,” then flips it by showing a range of unique, high-energy experiences. For our chapter, I highlighted things like competitive dance, skiing, and paragliding — showcasing the different interests and personalities within AOII and celebrating how we’re all unique in our own ways. Using this trend let us show that sorority girls can be multifaceted, confident, and adventurous, not fitting into one simple stereotype.
